Negev: Israel’s last Wilderness

I am John from England, my wife Marion is from France and we are owners of Krivine Guesthouse in Midreshet Ben Gurion…

… in the heart of the Negev Highland

In this post, we tell you more about who we are, but in this blog we want to tell you about where we live.

About the Negev Highland

The Negev Highland, an area of 4000 square kilometres, constitutes 22% of the land space of Israel (dark green on the map).

but gets about 1% coverage in the travel books

and that is not at all OK with Marion.

The Negev Highland is quite simply the Israel of the Bible.  This sparsely populated wilderness is the cradle of Abrahamic civilization, replete with ancient ruins, ill-understood civilizations, lost cities and sacred sites. It would take you a year to explore all of them.  It is full of protected wildlife with back-to-back Nature Reserves and National Parks, countless hiking trails, bike trails, 4×4 trails, all well-marked and well-maintained. It is ornithological paradise! All this plus the fact that the Negev Highland is safe and accessible.

Experiencing something completely different

On leaving, our overseas guests typically express the feeling that they wish they had spent more time down here and less up there… ‘if we had only known, we would have come here at the start of our trip to Israel and stayed longer”. And the reason they say this is not because our guesthouse is so fabulous, it is because the Negev Highland is the Israel of their imagination. This is what they came to Israel to see, and we happen to be good at helping them find what they seek.

So we have started to write a blog in order to show people what there is to see in the Negev Highland and exactly why, when and how to get there.  It is a work in progress, we intend to update it twice a week until every last attraction gets pictures and text down to the smallest detail. We also tell you a bit about ourselves and our guesthouse naturally. Eeverything is set out in categories so that you can go straight to the things that appeal to you. We hope it will be a fun read.

  1. Very accessible sites showing your exaltation of nature surrounding you. Very contagious. In two weeks’ time, I’ll be there. See you.
